In addition to their value as serving and eating implements they were also prized for their beauty.  As evidenced by the holes drilled in the sides, they were worn as adornment.   The ornamentation of these utilitarian objects is another example of man's desire or attraction to beauty that we see throughout all cultures, throughout history.
