Massim Sword Club

Trobiand Islands, Papua New Guinea

Ebony Wood

19th Century

30" Long

Provenance: Christie's London; Leo and LillianĀ Fortess collection, Hawaii

Traditionally, many Massim sword clubs are intricately carved over much of their surface. This piece is unusual in its simple elegance. The deep dark patina emphasizes the curvaceous shape of the club, as well as the relaxed composition of the bird perched atop the grip.
