The Karaut is an excellent example of PNG fiber ornamentation. Abelam warriors use them to frighten their enemies. To activate a Kaurat’s power, prior to battle it is held in a warrior’s mouth to stimulate courage and to intimidate their opponents. Away from combat, it exudes a distinct personality that is appealing and captivating.
