The word linga, in Sanskrit, means "mark" or symbol.  A Lingam is usually associated with Lord Shiva, to represent both the male and female generative power in nature.  Being such, the imagery has taken on a highly sexual representation, which can be seen in this piece. 

To try to explain the spiritual meaning of a lingam, in a paragraph, would do it an injustice, but the esthetic speak for it's self.
