Dog Tooth and Fiber Mask

Madang Province, Papua New Guinea

Fiber, Dog Teeth, Nassa Shells and Natural Pigments

First Half 20th C.

10"H x 6.5"W

Ex: John Friede Collection

Found in the coastal region of the Ramu River, this dog tooth and fiber mask is unique to the Madang Province area. The playful, joyful expression, with it's crooked smile and large eyes, makes this mask approachable, you can't help but smile along with him. The red and blue pigments, still vibrant, nicely set off the white of the nassa shells and dog teeth. The mask was made by an accomplished craftsman and is in excellent condition.  It also has a fine provenance, coming from the Freide collection.
