Ceremonial Metate

Coata Rica

10th – 11th Century

10.25" dia. x 6.25" h

This metate is presumed to be a ritual offering table due to the extensive embellishment of such an utilitarian object.  Monkeys circle the base, two with teeth fiercely bared, aggressively protecting the space encircled by their bodies.  Artistically clever, designed with each figure holding their neighbors tail creating a fluid yet strong wall of protection.
