Prestige Cup
Kuba People, Democratic Republic of Congo
First Half 20th century
Wood and Fiber Cord
5" H x 5.5" W

This cup is beautifully carved in a basket weave motif.

Years of daily use have given it a rich brown patina and a wonderful softness to the carving, as well as an indentation on the handle from the fiber cord from which it was hung.

A native repair binds a crack running a couple inches down from the lip. On the underside is an old sticker with the word Bakuba, which is an early way of referring to the Kuba people.
