Northern India

Gupta Period, 4th to 6th Century

6" x 4"

The Gupta period  is thought to be when Indian art came into it's own.  Previously, Kushan and Gandharan art, had been heavily influenced by the Romans.  Where as Gupta sculptures had a more sensual esthetic, as evident with this stone relief, of the Hindu god, Vishnu.

Lacking it's head and most of the arms and legs, this piece is still striking with it's curves and motion.
