Masks, like most art, inspire and excite everyone differently.  Though, it is believed that this type of shaman's mask was used to scare off unfriendly spirits, this one has a deep and pensive gaze into the distance.

An unusual aspect of this particular piece, is how the nose is attached.  Usually, they are made to look as if it was carved into the fungus.  Here, there was no attempt to disguise the construction of the face. Three wooden pegs create the effect of a man who has seen his share of trouble.
