This mask depicts a stylized hornbill. The mask is worn as part of a full body costume, attached to a large fabric and fiber headdress embellished with cowries and feathers that sits on the back of the head.  In the initiation camps in the villages of the Northern Dan, the portrayal of a hornbill represents a guardian.
