Asmat Culture, Papua New Guinea
First Half 20th century
Wood and Pigment
82" H x 17.5" W

Collected some time between the 1930’s through the 1950’s by a school teacher stationed in West Papua.

This shield has a striking geometric design and the strong coloration of a piece acquired early in its life.

A number of these shields were gathered at that time and have, for the most part, remained together. Fortunately, we have those shields. If you would like to see images of other pieces from this collection, please contact us.
